Google to offer mobile wallets

Google to offer mobile wallets

GOOGLE will today take the wraps off a mobile-payment system that lets consumers pay with phones instead of cards at checkout points, hoping to beat Visa and others to the draw, a source said.

The Internet search and advertising leader will work with MasterCard, the world's second-largest credit- and debit- card-processing network, to launch the system, the source familiar with the matter told Reuters on Tuesday.

Google teamed up with MasterCard and Citigroup to develop the system, the Wall Street Journal reported in March.

It has signed up retail partners Macy's, American Eagle Outfitters and Subway, though it is unclear if the project will be launched nationwide or just in New York initially, the Journal cited sources as saying on Tuesday.

Google has invited reporters to attend a "partner event" today in New York to demonstrate what it called its "latest innovations".

It plans to unveil the mobile- payment system, which will run on the Android operating system and be available on phones from Sprint Nextel Corp, Bloomberg reported on Tuesday.

A source familiar with the matter confirmed that Google would launch the system. Citigroup did not respond to requests for comment. Google, Sprint and MasterCard declined comment.

Coming your way by 2012: 4G phones

Coming your way by 2012: 4G phones

SINGAPOREANS can enjoy a faster and smoother online experience on fourth-generation mobile networks at the end of the year at the earliest.

But don't be surprised if there are no cellphones commercially available that can run on these 4G networks yet.

Fourth-generation networks, specifically the 4G-branded technology called Long Term Evolution (LTE), are said to offer mobile-broadband speeds several times faster than those of 3G.

SingTel confirmed yesterday that it will offer subscription services on its LTE network by year's end, but believes dongles gadgets that allow notebooks to go online using mobile networks are more likely to be available first.

However, Ms Chan Yim Leng, the telco's vice-president for consumer products, said that, if smartphones that can support 4G are available then, they will be launched. "It is dependent on device manufacturers," she said on the sidelines of the Unwired 2011 conference.

She highlighted current compatibility issues between many LTE phones and Singapore's upcoming networks, thus limiting the number of phones to be sold here.

StarHub will deploy its LTE network "later this year". M1 has begun doing so this month and is expecting to complete it by the first quarter of next year.

Both telcos could not confirm when commercial services would be available. Mr Ivan Lim, M1's deputy director for corporate communications and investor relations, said that, "subject to the availability of devices, we may launch earlier in selected areas".

GSS starts tomorrow

Brisk sales even before GSS starts tomorrow

THE annual Great Singapore Sale (GSS) starts tomorrow but, for some retailers, the shopping frenzy began at least two weeks ago.

Businesses eager to step up their revenue during the two- month-long shopping season have been rolling out early discounts. Retailers say they are riding on the buoyant spending mood and shoppers' pent-up desire to splurge.

The latest figures from the Department of Statistics show a 7 per cent jump in retail sales, excluding that of motor vehicles, in March over the same month a year ago.

Ms Eleanor Chin, head of brand and values at The Body Shop Singapore, said: "By starting our sale early on May 16, we can capture sales from consumers who are ready to spend but are holding back...until the sale officially starts."

Eyewear chain Capitol Optical's GSS promotion was launched on May 14, to drum up excitement among shoppers. The chain's general manager, Mr Stanley Chan, said: "In the optical industry, unlike the fashion industry, consumers do not rush down to the shops to grab the best bargains."

Retailers interviewed said they are not worried that the early promotions will cause the sale to lose steam quickly, as new offerings will be rolled out throughout the sale period to sustain shoppers' interest.

They added that they expect a jump in spending over last year's GSS, when retail sales raked in $5.3 billion, as the economy is improving and tourist arrivals remain robust.

Realise your invention with ideas2IP

Realise your invention with ideas2IP

IF YOU have ideas for new inventions, like an iPhone rival, but do not know how to realise your ideas or lack the means to do so, help is here.

The Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (Ipos) yesterday launched an online portal called ideas2IP that will help match inventors with prospective investors in a secure environment.

For instance, investors need to be pre-qualified by Ipos and the agency will also advise inventors to sign non-disclosure agreements with investors so that their ideas will be kept secret.

Speaking on the sidelines of an event held at Resorts World Sentosa to mark the 10th anniversary of Ipos, its director-general, Ms Liew Woon Yin, said the impetus to set up the portal which is on a one-year trial arose from public feedback for a way to determine the feasibility of budding inventors' ideas.

One investor, Invention Capital, has already signed on with ideas2IP and another could come on board soon.

Mr Ryan Lee, chief executive of Xmi, the home-grown firm that created the hit X-mini capsule speakers, cheered the launch of ideas2IP. He said: "It could be refreshing to get involved in the portal...to see what ideas other people outside of the company may have, with regard to the development of our products, and to get a fresh perspective on things."

Ipos also launched a competency framework to raise the capabilities of intellectual-property professionals and practitioners.

Thrills aplenty at RSAF Open House

Thrills aplenty at RSAF Open House

ALWAYS wanted to find out what it feels like to be in the hot seat of the Republic of Singapore Air Force's (RSAF's) new F-15SG fighter jets? You may just get a chance to, if you visit the RSAF Open House at Paya Lebar Air Base over the weekend.

For the first time, members of the public will be able to get up close and personal with the F-15SG which the RSAF received in 2009 and even climb into the cockpit. But that is not all. Visitors will also get a chance to have a good look at the Spyder-SR ground-based air-defence system and the S-70B Seahawk naval helicopter for the first time.

Heating up the event will be the ever- popular aerial displays. Visitors will not only get to watch the F-15SG and F-16C/D jets take off from the runway, but also hear the rumble of their afterburners as they screech into heart-stopping aerial manoeuvres.

Demonstrations will also be put up by Singapore Armed Forces commandos, who will rappel from Super Puma helicopters, and the Red Lions parachute team. If you are lucky, you could also win a ride in the CH-47 Chinook utility helicopter, the DA-40 Diamond Star training aircraft, or the C-130 and Fokker-50 transport aircraft.

Register by entering a lucky draw which will be held near the main stage of the performance hall at the Open House. About 500 to 600 rides are up for grabs each day.

The RSAF Open House will be held at Paya Lebar Air Base on Saturday from 9.30am to 7pm, and Sunday from 8.30am to 7pm. Admission is free. For details, visit www.mindef.gov.sg/rsafopenhouse

S'poreans sell camera-free iPhone 4 sets

S'poreans sell camera-free iPhone 4 sets

APPLE iPhone 4 users in sensitive areas of work, or those in the military where camera phones are prohibited, now have the option of getting the smartphone's inbuilt camera removed or covered.

Three Singaporeans decided to tap into this market, launching a website last month to tout their services. Would-be buyers can get a DIY iPhone 4 back-cover replacement kit which conceals the inbuilt phone camera for $170, or a pre-packaged iPhone 4, which comes new without a camera for about $1,100.

One of the three founders of the business, who gave his name only as Kelvin, said that the idea to remove the popular smartphone model's camera was broached when the trio discussed which was the best non-camera mobile phone in the market.

The 22-year-old is a partner in a local media company, while the other two work in the defence industry. They have sold just over 100 sets to both local and overseas buyers, with about 20 per cent of their clientele hailing from countries such as the United States and India.

Kelvin said that profit is "minimal", with most of it going towards offsetting the cost of materials used.

The replacement parts are ordered from two factories in Shenzhen, China, which hold "official manufacturing contracts with Apple", said Kelvin.

Netizens have raised doubts on online forums over whether the modified phones are permitted into restricted areas, such as military camps.

The Ministry of Defence said that it does not allow any unauthorised image-capturing devices, such as video cameras, cameras or phones with cameras, to be taken into Singapore Armed Forces camps and training areas, for security reasons.

However, servicemen who have operational requirements may be authorised to carry smartphones with the cameras disabled.

Millward Brown

Evil Empire

Improved economy makes lavish Mother's Day

Improved economy makes for a more lavish Mother's Day

More mothers spent their special day in style this year, as improved economic conditions allowed consumers to loosen their purse-strings.

On Sunday, many were treated to fine dining, free concerts and museum visits, as well as all the perks businesses could afford for Mother's Day.

Temasek Polytechnic estimates that children spent an average S$200 to S$500 on their mothers this year, a clear turnaround from the recession years.

Industry experts attributed this kind of spending behaviour to better financial and economic health.

"I think in the past, people tended to be more thrifty on occasions like this. But in recent years, there are more and more people actually wanting to celebrate this occasion. Of course, I think maybe when things get better they are willing to spend more," said Mr Samuel Tan Wah Ngui, course manager in retail management at Temasek Polytechnic.

More than 1,500 beneficiaries and residents from various Voluntary Welfare Organisations and grassroots constituencies celebrated at Esplanade with a "Beautiful Sunday" musical presentation of evergreen favourites at the Concert Hall.

Businesses were also more generous with freebies.

Eastpoint Mall in Simei, for instance, held a beauty pageant for the most good-looking mother and grandmother.

Kinki restaurant, meanwhile, launched a search for the hottest mum contest with a trip to Bali as the prize for the winner.

Temasek Polytechnic estimates that while the bulk of the spending would go to dining, it is also a boon time for retailers due to the economic upturn.

NSP、SPP、RP
