Asia's most demanding and largest endurance contest, the MediaCorp Subaru Challenge - The Asian Face-Off, is back for its 12th year.

The event is a joint initiative between Motor Image Enterprises and MediaCorp.

It starts on 26 October at Ngee Ann City's Civic Plaza.

The competition brings together a total of 400 contestants.

More than 300 will be Singaporeans. The rest come from Cambodia, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.

All contestants will try to outlast one another by placing their right palms firmly within the surface area of palm-shaped decals stuck on the surfaces of several cars.

Contestants will be given a five-minute break once every six hours throughout the competition.

The top prize is the Subaru Forester 2.0i Premium worth S$85,000 without COE.

"The MediaCorp Subaru Challenge has continually evolved over the years,” said Glenn Tan, executive director at Tan Chong International Limited.

"This is one of the reasons it's kept its place among the annual highlights in Singapore's event calendar. As we mark the 12th year in 2013, the challenge has become tougher, more interesting and even more fun, so look out for new twists and bigger rewards."

In addition to being eligible for the grand prize, regional contestants will also compete for additional titles and cash prizes.

The title of Country Winner and a cash prize of S$1,000 will be awarded to the final standing representative of each participating market.

The last standing regional contestant will win the Asian Winner title and walk away with an additional S$5,000 cash. The country or region whose participants have the longest combined standing time will be awarded the Country Team Winner title along with a cash prize of S$10,000, to be equally divided among the team.

To mark the 12th year of the challenge, attractive prizes will also be given away once every 12 hours during the competition.

"On the social media front, new avenues to stay connected with contest updates will be introduced on Twitter and through the official Facebook page. As with every year, we look forward to see if another record time will be established by the ultimate challenge winner," said Erina Cook, senior programme director at MediaCorp’s Gold 90.5FM.

Those who want to take part in the challenge can call in to MediaCorp's radio stations - Gold 90.5FM, Class 95FM or 987FM from 9 September to 11 October to enter the first qualifying round.

This year, five lucky hopefuls can also qualify directly for the challenge through participation in activities organised by Motor Image via its "I LOVE SUBARU" Facebook fan page.

Another five direct entries can be won through activities organised by LostPaws, a free online community service that allows the public to put up pets or abandoned animals for adoption and help reunite lost pets with their owners via their community watch.

Last year's winner was Tholmas Gan Yu Shen, a 42-year-old Singaporean who checked in 78 hours and 30 minutes of standing time.

The current record stands at 81 hours and 32 minutes, held by the 2008 winner, Singaporean George Lee.
