RTM to show 41 of 64 World Cup matches

Gobind: RTM to show 41 of 64 World Cup matches, 27 live, 14 delayed (updated)

There will be 41 FIFA World Cup matches that will be aired for free on RTM for football fans to enjoy.

Communications and Multimedia Minister Gobind Singh Deo said that out of the 64 matches, the national broadcaster will show 41 matches, out of which 27 will be live and 14 delayed.

“From the Cabinet meeting this morning, the Government has agreed to broadcast for free the 2018 FIFA World Cup tournament on RTM.

“We know that this is where the world famous players will be in action.

“For me and the Ministry, this is an important international event so we think it is important that it should be broadcast by RTM as it is a government agency,” he said after his Ministry's post-Cabinet press conference on Wednesday (May 30).

Gobind said he had presented a working paper to the Cabinet and has allocated RM40mil as a ceiling cost.

“But the actual cost and so forth will be revealed tomorrow (Thursday) by the Finance Ministry.

“I expect it to be less as there will be negotiations and sponsors. We believe many will take part and so we hope by this way, it can reduce the overall cost,” he said.

THOSE who turn 50 this year can get free screenings for cervical, breast and colorectal cancer from next month, as part of a year-long project by the Singapore Cancer Society (SCS).

The project, called FIT50, marks the society's 50th anniversary, along with a month-long showcase at Lavender MRT station to promote early detection.

SCS chairman Choo Eng Chuan said the aim was to push for greater awareness. "Once you hit 50, (screenings) should be on your mind," he said.

Mrs Wendy Yeap, a counsellor who turns 50 this year, said she goes for yearly Pap smears and mammogram screenings. She might now consider getting a Faecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) kit, used to detect colorectal cancer.

Free Pap-smear tests and mammograms can be done at participating SingHealth Polyclinics, National Healthcare Group polyclinics, the radiologic clinic at the Health Promotion Board and the SCS' clinic. FIT kits can also be collected at the SCS clinic and some Guardian outlets.

SCS will also be pumping $10 million into its hospice-care service, with the aim of tripling its capacity within the next three to five years. It hopes to eventually serve up to 1,000 patients a year.

Handy way soon to borrow library books

Handy way soon to borrow library books

There will soon be a more convenient way to borrow library books.

With a new application for smartphones and tablets, users will just have to download it to scan the barcodes on library books.

They can then borrow the books and bring them home directly, bypassing the need for identity card or library card and self-service machines.

The application will be ready next year.

The National Library Board showcased the application at the World Library and Information Congress which is taking place from 17-23 August.

Jasna Dhansukhlal, National Library Board's assistant director (library services and management), said: "It's really for people who are on the go, to make it very convenient and accessible to all of them.

"They can check out books, they can renew their loans, they can check whether the book is available at other libraries, they can even look for similar titles.

"This will make it very convenient for people who are not able to come down to the library and would like to use the services that we have in our public libraries."

More museums offering free admission to S'poreans, PRs

More museums offering free admission to S'poreans, PRs

More museums have come on board to offer free entry to Singaporeans and permanent residents.

Acting Culture, Community and Youth Minister Lawrence Wong revealed this on Saturday -- the first day of free entry to national museums and heritage institutions islandwide.

The museums saw about 10,000 visitors on Saturday -- compared to an average of about 7,800 on a usual day.

The additional attractions announced on Saturday are the Singapore Discovery Centre, the Army Museum and Memories at Old Ford Factory. With these on board, citizens and PRs can now visit 11 attractions for free.

They include the Asian Civilisations Museum, Malay Heritage Centre, National Museum of Singapore, Peranakan Museum, Reflections at Bukit Chandu, Singapore Art Museum, Singapore Philatelic Museum and Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall.

Mr Wong said that the initiative is an important step to strengthen their links with Singapore's past.

"These institutions, together with our national museums, I think they collectively keep alive the Singapore story, and they provide links to our past, and they help to strengthen our sense of common identity," he said.

"And I hope all Singaporeans will make full use of this free entry, to come, get to know the Singapore story and appreciate and enjoy our diverse culture and heritage."

Hafizah Latiff, a housewife, commented: "We parents sometimes don't know much about Singapore too. So when they do this, at least it's okay. (What's more), they have activities for children to join.”

Kovritam Thilagar, who has been a permanent resident for eight years, said: "It's a good opportunity for my children, my baby and my parents also, because they're learning more about Singapore and their history and it's a very important purpose.”

Mr Wong noted that the free entry is just a start of a broader strategy to make the museum experience a high quality one for visitors.

However, he added there would be times when Singaporeans have to pay for entry to museums, such as when they hold special exhibitions. Mr Wong explained these exhibitions are expensive, but it is important to have them, so that Singaporeans can be connected to the wider world.

During this year's budget, the government announced that it will pump in S$62 million over the next five years to buy and conserve artworks and artefacts in the national collection.

National Heritage Board (NHB) chief executive officer Rosa Daniel said this will help the museums further improve the quality of their artefacts.

Museums will also be actively looking out for artefacts relating to Singapore. They include colonial items, contemporary artwork by Singaporean artists, as well as personal items of Singaporeans linked to the history and heritage of Singapore.

Mrs Daniel added that more programmes are currently in the works.

She said: "I'm not going to spoil the surprises but certainly, we have a lot in store. We are hoping with free entries now, more Singaporeans, more visitors will come to the museums."

The museums kick-started day one of free entry with the sixth edition of the Children's Season exhibition.

Aimed to inspire, engage and educate children through experiential exhibits, Children's Season will run from May 18 to June 30, at 19 participating museums, including the National Museum of Singapore and Singapore Art Museum.

In the past 10 years, NHB has seen an increase of almost three-fold in visitor numbers from 1.1 million in 2003 to 2.8 million in 2012.
