POSB & DBS tea parties
POSB and DBS clients, get ready for tea parties
Don't be surprised to hear of talks on fengshui, or even a tea party, being held at a POSB or DBS Bank branch near you.
Under a new operating model, managers at all POSB and DBS branches have been given the autonomy to organise and tailor activities to cater to the interests of their customers.
This was revealed at a media briefing held yesterday at DBS Building. Piloted at 12 POSB branches last year, the initiative was rolled out to all 67 POSB and DBS branches in January.
For instance, Ms Joycelyn Tan, POSB business manager at the Compass Point branch, organised a fengshui talk in January to complement the Chinese New Year festivities.
But such activities are not solely for fun and games, as they allow the branch's staff to interact with customers, and gain a better understanding of their banking needs, said Ms Tan.
Each POSB branch spans about 2,600 sq ft and serves some 120,000 regular customers. POSB said it has enhanced its centres which are smaller versions of its branches that do not provide financial-planning services.
Two service staff members have been assigned to each centre to provide basic banking services, such as ATM-card replacement and account opening.
At the briefing, POSB and DBS also revealed that their automated teller machines (ATMs) are being upgraded to read the EMV (Europay, MasterCard and Visa) smart chips that are being installed progressively in all their ATM cards.

More young professional investing
More young professional investing
More young Singaporeans -- mainly professionals under the age of 40 -- are having a hand into trading shares on the stock exchange.
A recent research said the advent of online or Internet trading is the main driver behind the increasing number of young investors.
Some 58 per cent of Singaporeans are described as current or occasional investors.
Fifty per cent of potential investors are under the age of 40, with 65 per cent of them earning a monthly income between S$4,000 and S$6,000.
This is according to a study by Standard Chartered Bank which said on average, an individual owns at least 2.3 investments.
Stocks and unit trusts are the most popular forms of investments, accounting for 45 per cent of trade volume.
The survey polled some 500 professionals, managers, executives and technicians (PMETs) in Singapore.
It added online trading has increased investors' access to overseas markets.
Standard Chartered Bank Singapore and Southeast Asia regional head of wealth management Andrew Chia said: "Their favourite market is still SGX, followed by the US markets.
"... The younger and even some affluent customers... (have) started to do it on a DIY basis - they will buy and sell shares, ETFs (exchange traded fund) online, on their own".
But remisiers here said they are unperturbed by the rising competition from online trading.
Many said they believe it is unlikely their roles will be replaced by online trading and believe that both are complementary.
There are still numerous post-trading functions that remisiers perform, including payment and settlement matters.
The Society of Remisiers president Albert Fong said: "With the internet, while you're busy serving the customers who need more help, there are those who are very comfortable to trade on (their) own, and with our support, they are likely to trade more".
Remisiers said they also assist their clients with interpreting market information and understanding corporate entitlements such as bonus issues.
Meanwhile, the study has spurred Standard Chartered to launch its new online trading platform.
The bank said it believes there is potential for the online trading business, and also sees it as an added service for its customers who already conduct banking transactions online.
"We offer access to 10 different countries, 14 exchanges - very competitive charges," Standard Chartered Bank's Mr Chia said.
"And most importantly... we are the first to offer no minimum commission."
The bank charges no minimum commission, and fees of 0.2 per cent for trading of Singapore-listed shares and 0.25 per cent for trading in all other markets.

GSS starts tomorrow
Brisk sales even before GSS starts tomorrow
THE annual Great Singapore Sale (GSS) starts tomorrow but, for some retailers, the shopping frenzy began at least two weeks ago.
Businesses eager to step up their revenue during the two- month-long shopping season have been rolling out early discounts. Retailers say they are riding on the buoyant spending mood and shoppers' pent-up desire to splurge.
The latest figures from the Department of Statistics show a 7 per cent jump in retail sales, excluding that of motor vehicles, in March over the same month a year ago.
Ms Eleanor Chin, head of brand and values at The Body Shop Singapore, said: "By starting our sale early on May 16, we can capture sales from consumers who are ready to spend but are holding back...until the sale officially starts."
Eyewear chain Capitol Optical's GSS promotion was launched on May 14, to drum up excitement among shoppers. The chain's general manager, Mr Stanley Chan, said: "In the optical industry, unlike the fashion industry, consumers do not rush down to the shops to grab the best bargains."
Retailers interviewed said they are not worried that the early promotions will cause the sale to lose steam quickly, as new offerings will be rolled out throughout the sale period to sustain shoppers' interest.
They added that they expect a jump in spending over last year's GSS, when retail sales raked in $5.3 billion, as the economy is improving and tourist arrivals remain robust.

Realise your invention with ideas2IP
Realise your invention with ideas2IP
IF YOU have ideas for new inventions, like an iPhone rival, but do not know how to realise your ideas or lack the means to do so, help is here.
The Intellectual Property Office of Singapore (Ipos) yesterday launched an online portal called ideas2IP that will help match inventors with prospective investors in a secure environment.
For instance, investors need to be pre-qualified by Ipos and the agency will also advise inventors to sign non-disclosure agreements with investors so that their ideas will be kept secret.
Speaking on the sidelines of an event held at Resorts World Sentosa to mark the 10th anniversary of Ipos, its director-general, Ms Liew Woon Yin, said the impetus to set up the portal which is on a one-year trial arose from public feedback for a way to determine the feasibility of budding inventors' ideas.
One investor, Invention Capital, has already signed on with ideas2IP and another could come on board soon.
Mr Ryan Lee, chief executive of Xmi, the home-grown firm that created the hit X-mini capsule speakers, cheered the launch of ideas2IP. He said: "It could be refreshing to get involved in the portal...to see what ideas other people outside of the company may have, with regard to the development of our products, and to get a fresh perspective on things."
Ipos also launched a competency framework to raise the capabilities of intellectual-property professionals and practitioners.

Teguh Herba to expand distribution nationwide
Teguh Herba to expand distribution network nationwide
TEGUH Herba Enterprise, a manufacturer of traditional herbal energy drink and herbal capsule health supplement, plans to expand its distribution network throughout the country in its effort to widen and increase awareness of its products.
With the planned expansion of its distribution network, the Kuantan-based enterprise, which owns Teguh Herba brand of herbal cocoa drink and herbal capsule health supplement, is confident that its locally concocted herbal products would offer value added health benefits to a wider section of the nation’s population.
Currently, the products are sold in Pahang directly to consumers and through online sales. Both products are also available through mail orders with consumers hailing from Kelantan, Johor, Perak, Kedah, Penang, Perlis and Malacca.
Formulation and contract manufacturing of the Teguh Herba products are undertaken by TPM Biotech Sdn Bhd at the TPM Biotech’s Herbal Biotech Centre in Raub, Pahang. TPM Biotech is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Technology Park Malaysia Corporation Sdn Bhd, an agency under the Science, Technology and Innovation Ministry.
Wide range: Khairul showing his company’s herbal cocoa drink and herbal health supplements that are manufactured by TPM Biotech at its facility in Raub, Pahang.
Teguh Herba Enterprise manager Khairul Redzuan Ibrahim said the company aimed to explore the markets in Sabah, Sarawak and Brunei.
The company’s current monthly production of the herbal cocoa energy drink is 3,000 boxes and 5,000 boxes for the herbal capsule supplement. They are approved by the Health Ministry’s National Pharmaceutical Control Bureau and certified halal by Jakim.
The herbal energy cocoa drink comes in 20 sachets each box. It contains extracts of two main herbal ingredients: tongkat ali and lasianthus. The herbal capsule supplement, which contains 100% herbal extracts, comes in a box of 30 capsules.
“It is our vision to ensure our quality products, which are affordably priced, will be able to reach a wider public. We have invested substantially in time and money for research and development (R&D) of both these products because we strongly believe in sharing the invaluable concoction developed by our founder through his earlier sufferings,” said Khairul.
On the company’s future expansion plan, Khairul said plans were in the pipeline to diversify into new herbal health products for women to restore their health and vitality after pregnancy.
“We wish to express our gratitude to TPM Herbal Biotech Centre for opening the doors and showing us the opportunities in our business venture. The manufacturing aspects and maintaining the consistent quality of our products are taken care of by TPM Biotech.
The herbal cocoa energy drink and herbal capsule were formulated by the company’s founder, Ibrahim Manan, in 2008 who consumed the concoction himself to reduce his blood sugar level.
In wanting to share his formulation for diabetic treatment, Ibrahim and his family turned his earlier adversity into a business opportunity by venturing into the traditional herbal treatment industry.
TPM Biotech Sdn Bhd’s Herbal Biotech Centre was recently awarded the Hazard Analysis and Critical Control Point Audit Standard (HACCP) certificate whereby food products manufactured by it can be exported internationally.
In addition, the TPM Biotech facility also has the Good Manufacturing Practices (GMP) status, accorded by the Health Ministry’s National Pharmaceutical Control Bureau in 2006.
